FAQs
Questions we get asked a lot
Straight answers about automation, security, smart homes and IT. Can't see yours? Give us a call.
General
Do you only work on systems you installed?
No. We repair, service and upgrade gate motors, garage openers, shutters, awnings, alarms and intercoms from most common brands, whoever put them in.
Can you automate what I already have?
Very often, yes. Existing gates, garage doors, roller shutters, awnings and some blinds can be motorised without replacing them. We'll check on site and tell you straight what's worth doing.
Can everything be controlled from one app?
Yes. That's what we do best. With a smart hub, your gate, garage, blinds, shutters, lights, climate and alarm can live in one app, with scenes that run several actions at once.
What happens in a blackout?
Battery backup can be fitted to gates, garage openers and alarm systems, and every motor we install has a manual override. Where the hub supports it, the system also keeps running locally without the internet.
Is a smart home a security risk?
Not when it's set up properly. As an IT business, we put smart devices on their own network segment, change default passwords and keep firmware updated.
Where do you work?
All of NSW. We're based in Bangor in the Sutherland Shire and work right across Sydney, the Illawarra, Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Hunter. Larger regional projects are scheduled by arrangement.
Do you work with builders, strata and businesses?
Yes. As well as homes, we work with builders on new builds, strata committees on gates, barriers and access control, and small businesses on both automation and IT.
How long has the business been around?
Since 1989. That's 37 years, and almost all of our work still comes from word of mouth and repeat clients.
How do I get a quote?
Use the quote form or give us a call. Photos of the gate, door or windows help us give you an accurate idea of what's involved before we come out.
Do you do IT for homes as well as businesses?
Yes. From whole-home Wi-Fi to a new laptop set-up, we look after households as well as small businesses.
By service
Gate Automation
Can you automate the gate I already have?
Usually, yes. If the gate swings or slides freely and the posts and hinges are sound, we can motorise it. If it drags or sags, we'll fix that first. A motor on a bad gate just fails faster.
What happens to my gate in a blackout?
With a battery backup fitted, it keeps working for a number of cycles on battery. Without one, every motor we install has a manual key release so you can open it by hand.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes. We can add a smart controller so you can open, close and check the gate from an app, give visitors temporary access, and get a notification if it's left open.
Garage Door Openers
Can you motorise a manual garage door?
Most sectional, roller and tilt doors can be motorised as long as the door is balanced and in good order. We check the springs and tracks as part of the quote.
My opener is old and loud. Is it worth replacing?
If it's struggling, chewing through remotes or has no safety beam, a modern opener is quieter, safer and can add phone control. It usually costs less than people expect.
Will it work during a power outage?
With a battery backup fitted, yes, for a number of cycles. Every opener also has a manual release so you're never locked in or out.
Motorised Awnings
Can you motorise my existing awning?
In most cases, yes. If the frame and fabric are in good condition, we fit a tubular motor inside the roller and add a remote or switch.
What happens if a storm comes through while I'm out?
With a wind sensor fitted, the awning retracts on its own once gusts pass a set threshold. You don't have to be home.
Does it need power outside?
A hardwired motor needs a power point or a circuit run by a licensed electrician. Battery and solar options suit spots where running power is hard.
Motorised Blinds & Curtains
Do I need power at every window?
No. Battery and rechargeable motors work well for most blinds and last months between charges. Hardwired motors suit new builds and renovations.
Can I control them with Google or Alexa?
Yes. Through a smart hub, blinds can be controlled by voice, by app and in scenes with your lights and climate.
Can you motorise blinds I already have?
Some quality roller blinds can be converted. We'll check the tube size and fabric weight and tell you straight if it's worth doing.
Roller Shutters
Can you convert my manual shutters?
Most strap and winder shutters can be converted to a tubular motor. We'll confirm on site and give you a fixed price.
What if the power goes out while they're closed?
Motors can be specified with manual override, and battery options are available for exits that need it.
Do shutters link with the alarm?
They can. Arming the alarm can close the shutters, and an alarm event can trigger lights and notifications.
Smart Home Control
Do I need to replace everything to go smart?
No. Many existing gate motors, garage openers and shutters can be connected with a small controller. We'll tell you what can be integrated and what's worth upgrading.
Is a smart home secure?
It is when it's set up properly. We change default passwords, keep devices updated and put smart devices on their own network segment, the same way we would for a business.
What if the internet goes down?
Your remotes, switches and keypads keep working. Where the hub supports local control, schedules and scenes keep running too.
Alarms & Security
Can you take over my existing alarm?
Often, yes. We can re-program or upgrade many existing panels and add app control rather than ripping everything out.
Wireless or hardwired?
Hardwired suits new builds and renovations. Modern wireless sensors are reliable and ideal for existing homes where running cable is hard. Many systems use both.
Can I watch the cameras from my phone?
Yes. We set up secure remote viewing so you can check live and recorded footage from anywhere.
Intercoms & Access Control
Can the intercom open my existing gate motor?
Almost always. Most gate motors have an input for an intercom or access controller, and we wire and test it as part of the install.
Do you do access control for strata buildings?
Yes. We install and manage tag and keypad access for common doors, car park gates and lifts in smaller strata schemes and businesses.
Do I need Wi-Fi at the gate?
For phone answering, the intercom needs a network connection. We can run cable, use a point-to-point wireless link or extend your Wi-Fi properly. It's what we do on the IT side.
Boom Gates & Barriers
Do you service boom gates you didn't install?
Yes. We service and repair most common barrier brands and can upgrade the access control at the same time.
Can residents use their phones to open the barrier?
Yes. App and phone-based access can be added alongside tags and remotes.
How long does an install take?
Most single-lane barriers are installed and commissioned in a day once the footing and cabling are ready.
Repairs, Servicing & Remotes
Do you fix systems you didn't install?
Yes. A big part of our work is repairing and upgrading systems put in by other companies, or by the builder.
Can you supply a remote for my gate or garage?
In most cases, yes. Tell us the brand and model of the motor or send a photo of the old remote, and we'll confirm compatibility.
How often should automation be serviced?
Once a year suits most homes. Busy strata and commercial gates benefit from a service every six months.
Networks & Wi-Fi
Why does my Wi-Fi drop out in some rooms?
Usually it's one router trying to cover a house built from brick, tile and glass. Properly placed access points with wired backhaul fix it for good.
Do smart devices really need their own network?
It's best practice. Many smart devices are rarely updated, and keeping them separate protects the computers and phones that hold your personal data.
Can you get a signal to my gate intercom?
Yes. Depending on distance, we run cable, install an outdoor access point or set up a point-to-point wireless bridge.
Managed IT for Small Business
How big does a business need to be for managed IT?
There's no minimum. We look after businesses from a few staff upwards, and the plan is sized to what you actually have.
Can you work alongside our existing IT person?
Yes. We can take on the monitoring, patching and after-hours work and leave day-to-day tasks with your in-house person.
Do you provide on-site support?
Yes, across NSW. Most issues are resolved remotely, and we come out when hands-on work is needed.
IT Support & Repairs
Do you help home users or only businesses?
Both. Plenty of our automation clients call us for home IT too.
How does remote support work?
You run a small secure tool, we connect with your permission, and you can watch everything we do. The session ends when we finish.
Can you move everything to my new computer?
Yes. We transfer files, email, browser bookmarks and settings, and set up your apps.
Cloud & Microsoft 365
Can you move our email to Microsoft 365?
Yes. We migrate from most hosts and providers, and plan the cut-over so you don't miss mail.
Do we need to back up Microsoft 365?
We recommend it. Microsoft keeps the service running, but deleted or overwritten data is your responsibility to recover.
Is multi-factor authentication a hassle?
Barely. An app prompt on your phone takes a second and stops the vast majority of account takeovers.
Cybersecurity & Backup
We're small. Are we really a target?
Yes, because small businesses are easier targets. Most attacks are automated and don't care how big you are.
Can smart home devices be hacked?
Poorly set up ones can. We change defaults, apply updates and isolate them so a compromised camera can't reach your computers.
What's the first thing we should do?
Make sure you have a backup that's been tested, and turn on multi-factor authentication for email. Those two steps alone make a huge difference.
